It’s Slinky’s 60th Birthday Party!

p1905ex2.jpg

Slinky who? A coiled spring toy from yesteryear? You may well have to ask. But not those of a certain age. Created like many things by accident, in this case by a marine engineer Richard James over fifty years ago, Slinky came into our lives as a springy thing which tumbles wobblingly down steps. Yes, she (or is she a he?- it’s not polite to give a girl’s age away) is a spring with a cool attitude, doing not much else quite happily, just needing a nudge from time to time. If you would like to become re-acqainted with this most docile of household pets and wobbly toy in black , or discover what all the fuss was about why not pop-over to Firebox You’ll have change out of a tenner, and bags (or coils) of fun! Etch-A-Sketch is back?

p1852h.jpg
Etch-A-Sketch: Once,in a time before handheld electronic gadgets,PDAs and the like, there was invented a game that tantalised, frustrated, and with no batteries required, was a go anywhere, play anywhere, thing. Well Etch-A-Sketch it seems never went away. The slate sized,red-framed instrument for those with playful or even artistic pretensions is here, but did it ever go away?

Why frustrating and time consuming? Concentrate hard ,but still produce strange staggered lines, which seem not to have been produced by your guiding hands-turn,then see your work of hours breakdown when your E-A-S is accidentally dropped or shaken. Fun? Artistic endeavour repaid? You bet. Since this plaything with a mind of its own ‘went away’, skilled practitioners have triumphed to give us all hope. Be amazed, take a look at this example of artistic skill

A spin-off from Donkey Kong this peripatetic pair (I mean they got just about everywhere in their adventures) led the Nintendo video games
drive from 1983.

This vinyl set also includes our other favourite characters in glorious clour: Bomb-omb,Bullet Bill,Paragoomba, and Yoshi. Dream on in the Mushroom Kingdom with these guys!

Monopoly:Own Your Own Personalized Property Game

p1565h.jpg
Did you know that the board game Monopoly was developed by an unemployed heating engineer called Charles Darrow and patented by him in 1935?

Darrow’s first version of the game was rejected by a toy manufacturer to whom he tried to sell it. That company rejected the game on the grounds it had 52 ‘faults’ with it and it would not catch on to become a big seller! Parker Brothers, the toy company did buy the game in the end.

It is reckoned that over 750 million have played Monopoly since it was patented by Darrow. Furthermore, Parker Brothers (now a Hasbro brand) prints $40 billion of Monopoly money every year,or twice the amount of real money printed by the US mint!

Now,and here’s the thing, Monopoly has continued to be developed since those early days. Indeed, although Darrow is credited with the game’s creation, he is perhaps more properly the person who developed the idea and made it the vast commercial success it is. Across the US,in the 1920s and 1930s, others had played a variation of the game. You,too, can join in the tradition of developing the most successful board game of all time(according to the Guinness Book of Records) and have your own personalized set produced for you! Create and name the properties you want in your own Monopoly game. Yes,you can do this, and change some other details, also! Retro Data Bank Calculator Digital Watch

casio_chrome_ill_prod.jpg

Now this is one for the time traveller. With design and technology from the 1980s,this watch has real personal appeal. The Casio DBC30 1Z is a computer for the wrist. It was groundbreaking then, and now it is just as admired for its functionality in one timepiece.Instantly recognizable in the 80s style, its black case and strap is still as cool as the first watches of its class worn.

Not content with just giving the accurate time, this great looking personal item also makes itself very useful to have around at all times. It is also a 50-page data bank (8 letters and 12 numerals to a page),8-digit calculator, alarm clock, calendar, program timer, and stop watch. If this ‘transport of delight’ to another age grabs you check the spec at the balcony shirts website.

retrostoreworld goes mod for mens shoes

iStock_000003966030XSmall.jpg

And not a Chelsea Boot in sight, yet…

…this 1960s scene evokes a little of the sun and siesta of early package tour holidays, but somewhere nearer the hub of the so-called swinging 60s things were a little livelier. The boy ‘modernists’ were making their mark. They were sporting a distinctive crop hairstyle,rounded-collar shirt, narrow trousers with 17 inch bottoms and no turn-ups,short tailored jacket, and winklepicker boots or shoes. This mod style beloved of the ‘Beatles’ and other teenage trendsetters had that Italian inspired ‘feel’.

The preferred footwear of choice was the black leather ‘Chelsea Boot’,with elasticated sides and/or side long zip, cuban heels and pointed-toes.The style though raging through the sixties never completely went away and can be bought, with variations, from good shoe retailers. As a follower of fashion you may wish to go to online retrostore atomretro.com retro clothing
